WHO WE ARE AND WHY WE CARE

Zamcog’s clear mission to support the most at-risk children in Zambia through education. For over 17 years, we have worked in the Kabwe town area where ground conditions are the most toxic in the world and in particular, Makululu – the largest slum area in southern Africa.

OUR WORK

Zamcog is a UK based registered charity focused on raising funds for the relief of poverty through the provision of education in Kabwe, Zambia.

Since it was started, Zamcog has turned a single classroom with only eight students into a boarding and day school for almost 450 pupils, including Robert Shitima Primary School and the Markit Secondary School, funded by global financial information and services company, Markit.

Through the Zamcog Zambia, we support children through primary, secondary and tertiary education and training programmes. Further to our funding of education and training programmes, we fund feeding and housing schemes to ensure that our students have the necessary access to the fundamental rights of food and shelter.

We firmly believe that in order for children to flourish in their education, their well-being must be prioritised first and foremost.

Mulumbo School, Makululu – A Beacon of Hope in Central Zambia

Makululu - Zamcog

In the heart of Makululu, one of the most impoverished communities in Kabwe, Central Zambia, sits Mulumbo School – a small but mighty learning haven for children who face extraordinary challenges every day.

Makululu is one of the largest informal settlements in Zambia, where families often live without access to clean water, reliable electricity, or regular income. For many children here, education is not a given – it’s a luxury. They are held back not by a lack of ability, but by the simple absence of opportunity.

At Zamcog, we are proud to support Mulumbo School, a place that brings dignity, purpose, and hope to children who need it most. The school is run by a passionate team of teachers, most of whom work voluntarily, including the inspirational headmaster who leads by example every single day. Despite limited resources, this dedicated team creates a safe and structured environment where children can learn, grow, and dream.

Our support focuses on reducing the barriers to education and offering holistic care for vulnerable children. Currently, Zamcog directly funds a salaried teacher at the school and provides essential books and classroom supplies to ensure that children receive a meaningful education. We also sponsor 30 children in full – covering their uniforms, books, lunches, and basic needs, allowing them to focus on learning rather than simply surviving.

Beyond the school walls, Zamcog works with children across the surrounding Makululu community, helping to build brighter futures through education, care, and consistent support. Our programmes are always rooted in safeguarding principles – every child’s well-being, safety, and dignity are our top priorities. We work closely with trusted local partners and teachers who understand the challenges these children face, and who are committed to protecting and empowering them.

Mulumbo School may be small, but its impact is mighty. Thanks to generous donations by sponosrs, we can continue to grow that impact – child by child, classroom by classroom, future by future.

HOW WE WORK

  • We identify an at-risk child
  • We carry out a vulnerability report to assess their most urgent needs.
  • If the child is identified to need educational support, they are invited to the appropriate education programme.
  • Where possible, communication with their parents or guardians begins and is continued throughout their education. This includes progress and school reports.
  • Additional tuition is provided if necessary, during exam years.
  • For students who are most successful in their final exams, we aim to arrange sponsorship to enable them to move on to further education.
Students not able to achieve the necessary grades to move on to tertiary education are offered the opportunity to take part in 6-12-month skills-based training programmes.
  • Beyond this, opportunities for those who are interested in entrepreneurship are provided by Zamcog Zambia who will review requests and make grants where suitable.
